Chapter 22

TWENTY MINUTES LATER the pair walked along Arapahoe Street towards one of the new high-rise apartment buildings built to replace the all too abundant, and seldom used, parking lots that had become eyesores in the minds of tourist.

An apartment on Arapahoe Street was the first on the list.  It was a millennial’s dream.  It was a high-rise building with a grand courtyard complete with a fabulous Olympic sized pool.  Best of all, it had every amenity that a millennial thought they wanted and/or needed; a spa, a gym, a shopping center, and a movie theater.  You name it, it had it.

“This place is fabulous,” chimed Laura as they walked through the apartment. “And the views.  I never knew Denver looked so good.  Imagine what it will look like at night.”

“I imagine that its ten years too young for me,” Jared said flatly/

“What?”

“I no longer that person nor do I have the sort of lifestyle that goes along with this place,” said Jared.  “Otherwise, your right, it’s perfect.”

“What are you really saying?  That it’s too expensive for you?” Laura asked, looking at him with serious concern.

“No,” he chuckled.  “I’m saying I’m a widower with a young child to look after.  My son, Lucas is my first priority.  That’s all I’m saying.”

Laura was quiet for a moment, wondering how to play this.

“OK.” She said, tossing her hair back and smiling at him.  “What’s next on the list?”

“A place on 18th Street.”

As soon as Jared walked into the apartment, he knew it was where he wanted to be.  It was his new second home.  It was not too big, like the ranch he’d purchased with Arabella, neither was it too small or presumptuous.  This was a place he’d gladly call their home away from home.

He walked through the apartment assuring himself that he was making the right decision.  They could get to know each other here without the encumberments of wealth, class, and station.

“Three bedroom apartments are hard to come by in Downtown Denver, Mr. Anderson.  If you want the apartment, we need to put in an offer as soon as possible,” advised his rental agent.

“I don’t know, I don’t think it’s you.  This place is big enough for a horde, but it doesn’t send the right message,” said Laura.

Once again affirming his first take on her.  That, although she looked like Arabella, she was not Arabella.

“Do I have time for one more walk through,” he asked.

The rental agent nodded her head.

The living room had an entry way closet for winter coats, strollers, and boots.  It also, offered up a generous view of the Chase Building so that Lucas and Ruby could see where he worked.  The galley kitchen was small but so was Ruby.  For the first time, he allowed himself to feel apprehensive over whether or not Ruby would come to Denver.  He wondered how she’d take what he’d told Mabel to tell her.  But, this was not the time to waiver.  He had a plan.  And all he had to do, to find out what he wanted to know, was to work the plan.

He walked back down the hall.  The first bedroom on his right was the smallest of the three; that one was for Lucas.  It was close enough that he’d hear if the child woke during the night.  The next bedroom was the master bedroom; his.  It was a nice size with a generous walk-in closet.  The last bedroom, to his left, was slightly larger than Lucas’ and shared the hall bathroom and was kiddie corner to his master bedroom.  That one would be Ruby’s.  That way, he could keep an eye on her.

Ten minutes later, after coming to the conclusion that this apartment fit his plan, he walked back into the living room where the rental agent and Laura were waiting and said, “I’ll take it.  Draw up the lease agreement and have it couriered over to my office.”
